What to expect
What to expect on my first visit?

As a Doctor of Chiropractic, the health and well-being of my patients is of paramount importance. Health is not merely the absence of symptoms. It is the absence of disease and imbalance. It occurs when all of the systems of the body are functioning properly. To restore true health it is necessary to determine the underlying cause of a condition. The treatment of many of these conditions can be addressed by restoring normal mechanical function.
In my practice, I help restore proper spinal biomechanics and improve nervous system function. I begin with a thorough case history, which provides me with your health background.  This will include past health problems, previous surgeries, accidents, the onset of your condition, and other details affecting your current health.

After reviewing your health history and discussing your specific problem, a thorough physical examination will be conducted. This will include orthopaedic, neurological, and biomechanical testing.  X-rays or other diagnostic procedures will be performed if deemed necessary to uncover the underlying cause of your condition.  These examinations will help identify areas of spinal malfunction and resulting nervous system deficit. They will also help identify other disease processes that might be responsible for your symptoms. If your problem is found to be due to a more ominous disease process, the appropriate referrals will be made.

The findings from these examinations will be explained in detail and any questions you might have will be answered. The recommended course of treatment will then be discussed.  Progress will be closely monitored and if it is decided that your condition is in need of further attention, the appropriate referral will be made.

I pride myself on getting quick and effective results. As well as helping to provide longer term changes for those looking for more than just symptomatic relief.

I may ask about the following:

  • personal and family medical history
  • major illnesses you have experienced
  • surgeries or operations you have had
  • medications you are taking
  • a description of your present condition
  • the steps you have taken to manage your condition
  • your diet and exercise
  • your sleeping habits, daily activities, work routine, stress level, and home life
  • a check of your blood pressure, pulse, and breathing
  • a test of your reflexes, strength, and sensations
  • an analysis of your posture
  • a x-ray of your spine (only if necessary)
  • an analysis of your movement - he/she will observe how you walk, turn, bend or lift things, as well as how your body moves in the affected area
  • a hands-on evaluation of how well your spine moves, identifying restrictions and areas of improper motion

TIP: Bring a copy of any x-rays or radiology reports you have. These assessments give your chiropractor a better picture of your complete health. He or she will make a diagnosis, prescribe a course of treatment, and once the matter of informed consent has been discussed, treatment usually begins.

Benefits of spinal manipulation and regular chiropractic care:

    • restores and maintains full range of motion
    • promotes healing
    • inhibits pain
    • maintains joint stability
    • reduces the risk of injury and degeneration
    • improves biomechanics
    • improves nutrition to discs and other joints
    • relaxes tight muscles
    • optimizes performance and coordination
    • promotes full function
    • induces a sense of well being and relaxation

Chiropractic manipulative therapy helps restore normal joint function in the body. This increases spinal integrity and allows for normal functioning of the nervous and musculoskeletal systems.  Joint manipulation stimulates mechanoreceptors and nociceptors, which act to:

    • reduce pain and autonomic concomitants
    • reduce sympathetic hyperactivity
    • reduce muscle spasm
    • reset the sensitivity of muscle spindles

Chiropractic has grown considerably in the last few decades.  This is in part due to its high rate of success and patient satisfaction. With the transition of Chiropractic into mainstream healthcare, the benefits have become evermore recognized by healthcare professionals and the general public alike.

    Education About Chiropractic:

Our bodies want to be healthy. They naturally strive to maintain the highest level of health they can. Sometimes, however, obstacles are put in their way. The result is dis-ease. The role of chiropractic is to correct one of the major sources of those obstacles: the vertebral subluxation.

Instructions from our brain are sent to all parts of the body as electrical impulses. These impulses travel along the spinal cord, which subdivides into individual nerve fibers throughout the body.
The spinal cord is protected by a "tunnel" of small, interlocking bones called the spinal column. The individual bones are called vertebrae. Nerves branch off from the spinal cord through small openings between the vertebrae. When each vertebra is in its proper position, the nerve fiber passes through without a problem. Nerve impulses can flow freely, racing to and from the brain at incredible speeds.

Although the spinal column is a sturdy structure, individual vertebrae can become misplaced. When that happens, it's called a vertebral subluxation. One of the most common causes of vertebral subluxation is automobile accidents. Yet, many everyday activities can result in subluxations as well. Picking up heavy objects, taking part in sports, and even sitting for prolonged periods at a desk can all put stress on the vertebrae.

    What is Dis-ease
When spinal bones are not in their proper place, the openings between them can narrow. The vertebrae can impinge on the nerves branching out from these spaces. This is commonly, though inaccurately, known as a "pinched nerve."

This interferes with the normal flow of energy along the nerve fibers. Messages traveling along the nerves will be distorted. If the full, normal energy flow cannot pass to and from the brain, some part of the body will be adversely affected.

We do not understand the human body well enough to predict exactly what effect a subluxation will have. The nervous system is far too complex for that. But we do know that any change in the flow of nerve energy has to result in an abnormal change in body function.

Sometimes, the fact that there is nerve interference becomes obvious. We experience pain, soreness, irregularity, weakness, digestive disturbances or other health imbalances.

These are symptoms of the body's dis-ease. They are NOT problems in themselves. They are outward alarms that a part of the human system isn't working right.

Ignoring these symptoms, or silencing them with pills, doesn't do anything to help the real problem. Unless we get to the root of the problem -- the nerve interference -- the affected organ will continue to function improperly and its health will decline.

If you wait until your body sends out pain or other clear signals, it may too late. You need to stop subluxations before they have a chance to do major damage and before they become difficult to correct.

Doctors of chiropractic are the only providers educated and trained to perform chiropractic adjustments to correct vertebral subluxations, and as such, chiropractic adjustments should only be provided by a licensed doctor of chiropractic.”

You -- and your entire family -- need to visit a chiropractor regularly to make sure you can all lead a healthy, subluxation-free life.
