Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What conditions do chiropractors treat?

Chiropractors are experts trained in the neuromusculoskeletal system. They diagnose and treat disorders of the spine and other body joints by adjusting the spinal column or through other corrective manipulation. Chiropractors provide conservative management of neuromusculoskeletal disorders including, but not limited to, back, neck and head pain (over 90 percent of conditions treated). They also advise patients on corrective exercises, lifestyle and nutrition.

Is it bad to “crack” your neck or back a lot?

The desire to "crack" or "pop" your neck or back is often times caused by jamming of the joints of the spine. This jamming in one part of the spine can cause other parts of the spine to compensate by moving too much and popping or clicking a lot. It is for this reason that chiropractors are trained to assess the structure and functions of the spine to determine which parts are not moving, and which parts are.  Only the parts that need to be moved are then adjusted.

My chiropractor has recommended neck adjustments. Is this safe?

File: PatientNeckAdjustmentHand-Out.pdf

Yes, it is. Millions of neck adjustments are performed safely and effectively every year in Canada. Neck adjustment is performed well within the normal turning range of the head. There is less movement that it takes to look over your shoulder.

One of the most recent studies into the safety of neck adjustment further confirms the safety of this procedure (1). This particular study, conducted in 2007, looked at over 19,000 chiropractic patients and tracked more than 50,000 neck adjustments. It found no instances of serious adverse effects. By way of comparison, neck adjustment is significantly safer than other commonly used health remedies. For example, long-term use of non-prescription pain relievers carries a far greater risk of serious complications than neck adjustment (2).

The most recent research into the rare cases of stroke found that patients who visit a chiropractor are no more likely to experience a stroke than are patients who visit their family physician (3). The study concludes that this type of stroke commonly begins with neck pain and/or headache which causes the patient to seek care from their chiropractor or family physician before the stroke fully develops.
This type of stroke is extremely rare and has been known to occur spontaneously. Research continues as to why in very rare cases, some people are susceptible when most of us are not.

The Canadian Chiropractic Association has prepared well researched answers to many of the question relating to chiropractic neck adjustments in the .pdf document above.

Why should I see a Chiropractor?

  • Are you suffering from lower back pain? Or, do your headaches never seem to go away?
  • Have you been injured at work or in a car accident and are having trouble dealing with the pain?
  • Are you active in sports, but after the game have stiff joints and shooting pains?
  • Are you pregnant with an aching back?
  • Are you in your Golden years and having trouble enjoying retirement because those aches and pains are getting in the way?
  • Are you concerned with the health of your whole body, and are looking for a different approach to health care?
  • Are you concerned with your newborn's or child's long term well being and growth?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, You should visit your local chiropractor.
Every day in Canada, over 120,000 people receive treatment from Chiropractic Doctors.

Chiropractors use a combination of treatments for your condition. They are specialists in using exact, gentle manipulations of your spine to make you feel great. Chiropractic treatment also includes diet and exercise programs to get you back into tip-top shape.

If I go to see a chiropractor, will I be expected to keep going?

That's entirely up to you. Some people only want to be treated for a specific pain or illness, and when the symptoms disappear they stop going. Others use chiropractic care to fully correct the underlying cause of the symptoms and to remain feeling really well. Similar to dentistry, chiropractic care can be used to prevent new problems from arising or maintain the progress you have already made. In fact the term spinal hygiene is often used by chiropractors and their patients.  Like a car, your body has constant stress and wear, and it benefits from a 'tune-up' once in a while. However, which treatment approach you want is always your choice.

What results can I expect from treatment?

That depends on your condition. The length of time you have had the problem, your age and the degree of your disability all affect the length of your treatment. Your chiropractic doctor should tell you the extent of treatment recommended, and how long you can expect it to last.

One of the main reasons people choose chiropractic is that they often get quick results. Individual cases vary and chronic conditions obviously need more treatment, but Workers' Compensation Board studies show that people with low back pain get back to work much faster with chiropractic care.

You might also consider the benefits of regular chiropractic adjustments even when you feel healthy. Sometimes you won't know you have a disorder of the neuromusculoskeletal system until it becomes acute and painful. So, just as you see your dentist to have your teeth checked and your optometrist for eye exams, regular visits to your chiropractor can catch related health conditions early, often preventing them from developing into major problems. Remember, your spine is every bit as susceptible to wear and tear as your teeth and your eyes so you should look after it.

The chiropractors and massage therapists at St. Albert Chiropractic and Massage Wellness Centre will be more than happy to provide you with tips to keep your spine, muscles and joints functioning properly.

How is the chiropractic adjustment performed?

The chiropractic adjustment is a manual procedure that utilizes the highly refined skills developed during four intensive years of chiropractic education. The chiropractor typically uses his/her hands to manipulate the joints of the body, particularly the spine, in order to reduce pain, and restore or enhance joint function.

Chiropractic manipulation is a highly controlled procedure that rarely causes discomfort. The chiropractor adapts the procedure to meet the specific needs of each patient.

Is chiropractic treatment appropriate for children?

Yes, children may benefit from chiropractic care. Children are very physically active and experience many types of falls and blows from activities of daily living as well as from participating in sports. Injuries such as these may cause many symptoms including back and neck pain, stiffness, soreness or discomfort. Chiropractic care is always adapted to the individual patient. It is a highly skilled treatment, and in the case of children, very gentle.

What is the difference between physicians and chiropractors?

That's like asking the difference between a physician and a dentist: they are different professions within the health care spectrum. Both chiropractors and physicians are legally entitled to use the title "doctor". As the appellation MD means "Doctor of Medicine", so DC means "Doctor of Chiropractic".

The role of chiropractic is complementary to other areas of primary health care. Chiropractic is not, for example, a replacement for medical care, but may offer an alternative to medication and surgery in appropriate circumstances.

Does chiropractic treatment require a referral from an MD?

No. A patient does not have to be referred. Chiropractors are legislated as primary contact health care professionals in every province in Canada. This means that patients can consult them directly.

Why is there a popping sound when a joint is adjusted?

Adjustment of a joint may result in release of a gas bubble between the joints that makes a popping sound - it's exactly the same as when you "crack" your knuckles. It is not painful. It is caused by the change of pressure within the joint resulting in gas bubbles being released.
